Are there free security systems in lieu of companies like Norton?

I heard Norton actually slows down the computer. If there are no free systems, can you recommend some. I am a senior with limited resources.

There is a wonderful free security system called AVG (www.grisoft.com). If you want to pay, I recommend McAfee.

AVG or AOL both are free and do the job very well.....good luck..

P.S. I hated Norton.......
I like Avast.com free virus scanner

and Microsoft Defender free spyware defender.

Yes, Norton has a reputation for slowing the pc.
You want free? There's a free (free as in no charge, and free as in open source, freely redistributable) AV program called ClamAV, with a windows front end. See http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamwin/

Note: I have not used this, since I run Linux at home, and ClamAV is targeted to scan for Windows viruses.
AVG free edition
