It changes from the desktop view to the a light blue screen with the windows xp symbol and states "Windows is Shutting Down" but it sits there forever. I end up having to disconnect the power from the rear b/c it won't even let me power it down with the power button. It's a 3 yr old HP, not that I think that has anything to do with it. I run Mcafee security suite and all protection is up to date.
Why does my computer get stuck at "Windows is Shutting Down" when I am shutting down my computer?internet security
A program or function is probably hanging up. Norton Internet Security is one of the worst offenders. Try shutting down all other running programs before shutting down the computer. If that works start leaving one on then two etc until you find the culprit. Also as you are shutting down watch for a "not responding" notification window. If you get one it will tell you the process that is not responding.

Before you want to shut down your computer, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to see what programs are running. Some programs don't respond well to the message telling them to shut down, so see if you can find the offending programs and close them before you shut down the computer. You may need to upgrade your computer's memory (RAM) so the programs will run more smoothly.
