Wireless Home Networking Security?

My DSL cable goes directly from the wall to the modem, then to the router!

I have an aircard in my laptop and I have wireless adapter for my xbox.

My question is, is it possible to make my network secure like I have it set up? I am thinking not because there is nothing controlling the router...

Or do I need to run the DSL cable from the wall to the modem to a DESKTOP COMPUTER THEN TO THE ROUTER! Im thinking that is the way I have to do this to set up a secure network so that others cant piggyback on my connection...

I really had rather do it the way I have it set up, but am wondering from yall if I can!

Thanks!

Ok. heres what ya do. I assume you have a wireless router. Ok well, your router should of come with a cd, or at least a manual. Look in the manual. All routers have a web page that you can goto that is available offline. It lets you change settings and what not. The page will be your ip address. it should be something like xxx.xxx.x.x it will ask for a username and password. Most of the time it will be admin for username and no password. you can go in and add a wep key. This lets you type in a password for your wireless connection. So other can see it, but unless they have the password they cannot use it.

if the router is a Wireless router then your current set up is okay. you should be able to configure the security settings in your Router Configuration page. Whether it's going to be password encrypted or MAC address filtered.
go from wall to modem to router, then to the computer, from there you can change the router setting with the computer thats hooked up to the router (if it came with software), this should let you decide to put on a password and what not

hope this helps

Anyway, you just need to add security to the wireless piece, and you're all set.
