I recently bought a used workstation that came with XP Pro already installed. I noted that it did not restart when prompted via the shutdown buttons. I have applied all security updates and have upgraded the browser to IE 7. I also noted that after I had deleted all files and history and restarted the browser or machine that when I open the browser to the home page I have set to Yahoo, I am still signed in as though I had not cleared all the cache and actually restarted the machine.
When I do elect to restart, the machine shuts down, restarts, but does not load the OS. I then hard shut down, wait a few seconds, power the machine on and the OS loads. What am I missing? Device manager shows no problems, AVG is installed and scanned daily.
This box has a P4 1.80 gig processor and 256 mb of extended RAM. Compac EVO.
Any ideas?
Computer will not restart XP Pro?virus protection software
Nothing you have done would have fixed the problem. The problem is somewhere between Bios and Hard Drive.
So when you restart it just never comes back up to Windows Xp? Does anything show up on the screen, or just black forever. Then if you shut the computer down leave it off for a while. it well come back up? What happens if you are in XP, then click Shut Down. Leave it off for just a mins and then turn it on, does it work? Can you even boot into safe mode?
